Interesting how we don't consider a woman to be cross dressing if she was to wear men's clothing.

No, we don't. We call her fashionable.

We think it's romantic if the lady dons her date's shirt the morning after. If he dons hers, well, there won't be another date, probably.

Isn't that a bit hypocritical?

If a woman wears a man's clothing, it's nothing but fashion. Yet, when a man wear a kilt (even though it was made for men) and people call it a "skirt," they say it's cross-dressing.

Folks,

Anyone who thinks a man wearing a kilt of cross dressing is ignorant.

Anyone who goes out of his way to accuse a kilt wearer of cross dressing is rude.

Anyone who is informed that a kilt is a male garment and doesn't accept it is stupid.

And frankly, they not really worth spending a lot of time worrying about.

While on my honey moon to Santa Barbara, I was wearing my kilt as we walked along the beach (we weren't going to the beach again because by that point we were both lobster red), a teen age girl called out to her friends "Look at the homo dressed like a girl," her male friend (boy friend) responded, "No that's a manskirt, it takes a man to wear one of those, and if you be that hatin' we not gonna be hangin' " While I appreciate his defense, I did wish his diction and word choice was better.

I've found strangely enough I get more of the rude comments (in ernest or in fun) from women in pants, I think I've received only one rude comment from a guy. I wish I could explain this since it seems most people here have had the opposite experience.

I remember last year, at the new years party I went to, I was in my kilt as was my husband to be, and a good friend showed up in his sarong (as had his wife, but that is far less comment worthy). Our host wanted to go change in to his.... Hamaka (?) a Japanese pleated male un-bifricated garment, but his wife said it wasn't clean and therefor he was not allowed. Several others said had they known the guys were going to be in various forms of skirts they would have come attired similarly. Maybe I just run with an odd group of friends.

Sadly, I have a couple of friends who give me this BS and I have to make the distinction between the ones who just do it in an attempt to yank my chain and the ones who sincerely think that I'm "getting way too in touch with my feminine side".

Ignore the chain yankers and just tell the other ones what a kilt is and why you're wearing it...but only once...if they don't get it then, forget about it because they're never going to understand. You don't need a running argument.

Personally all I can picture now is Yeti trying to put on one of my shirts, he's at least an XL and I'm still wearing shirts I got when I was 6 (it has an alligator on it.) That said, I'm in his sweatshirt and have been wearing it since I saw him last a week and a half ago.

On the topic of cross dressing, the first articles of clothing for both sexes were probably animal hides wrapped around the lower bodies of the wearer, a rudimentary kilt essentially. I don't see the kilt as either a man or a woman's garment really, in the same way jeans as a whole are not a "sexed" garment. It is the individual style and the way it is worn that determines the gender of the garment.
