    Ooh! Knitting hose!!

What is your favorite size needles? Currently I'm using US 6

What is your favorite size yarn? Cascade 220. I'm getting a gauge of 6.5/9 with this yarn on US 6 needles. It's a heavy fabric!

What is your favorite type of yarn? Cascade 220

Do you prefer circular or double pointed? DPNS (double points)

What is the make of your favorite needle? Brittany

Where do you get your yarn? LYS: Be a yocal - Buy local!

How long have your been knitting? Not yet three months

Do you use the English or Continental Style of knitting? English/throwing

Do you would you knit hose for others (X-Markers)? Maybe. But I don't think I've enough experience to undertake bespoke knitting. And I'm not sure anyone would pay what I would ask! My second set of hose have >250 stitch rows - it takes quite a while!

Keep in mind - I've only been knitting a few months. I'm currently on my second pair of hose. The answers to the questions about "favorite" really mean "what I've used so far", but I can't say if they'll be my favorite once I try others.

My first set of hose is from a self-made pattern. The second set uses the cuff from the www.knitty.com pattern, and I'm making my own pattern for the leg. One of these days I'll post pics...

    Hope this helps!

bOB Thank you. I have been using a knitting machine - which is quick, but is hard to take with me when shopping with my wife. I decided to pick up some circular needles I have and try hand knitting my hose. So far the time it has taken to knit two inched by hand I could have finished the foot, turned the heel and be on the way up the leg.

What is your favorite size needles? US 6

What is your favorite size yarn? Medium, about 13 wraps per inch and I'm getting about 7 stitches per inch.

What is your favorite type of yarn? Patons Classic Wool Merino

Do you prefer circular or double pointed? circular - Too many things to keep track of with DPNS.

What is the make of your favorite needle? I'm using some cheap bamboo needles and am trying to gather info. to buy my next set.

Where do you get your yarn? LYS: Be a yocal - Buy local! - I agree

How long have your been knitting? Did some in my teens - 40 some years ago. Picked up the needles just before Christmass.

Do you use the English or Continental Style of knitting? English/throwing

Do you would you knit hose for others (X-Markers)? Not at this time, I agree it is amassing how much time is put into a pair of hose.

    Looking forward to pictures.

What is your favorite size needles? my favorite needles in general are some old blue plastic size 3 DPNs, extra long and nice and bendy, I also love the Knitpicks needles, all of them both the wood and the metal. for regular socks I use size 0 or 00. I am a freakishly loose knitter.

What is your favorite size yarn? for kilt hose, DK, otherwise I like fingering and lace weight.

What is your favorite type of yarn? wool, superwash merino

Do you prefer circular or double pointed? I am using 2 circs at the moment, but I love me some DPNs

What is the make of your favorite needle? Knitpicks

Where do you get your yarn? I get yarn from several places, but knitpicks.com is where I get most basic yarns.
How long have your been knitting? I've been knitting for... 4 years? I'm not really sure, but 4 seems right. I learned in January, but I don't know which January.

Do you use the English or Continental Style of knitting? I knit continental, but i can knit with the yarn in my right hand too, for two color work, which I am just now learning.

Do you would you knit hose for others (X-Markers)? am currently. will again certainly, I am a poor starving unemployed college student with a yarn habit to feed.

I will add my own question... Toe up or Top down? I like both for different reasons and like to switch it up to avoid boredom

[QUOTE=cacunn;465834]Some questions for those that knit hose.

When knitting kilt hose or just plain socks:

What is your favorite size needles? About US size 1 - up to size 4 or 5 maybe for thicker socks.
What is your favorite size yarn? English 3 or 4 ply normally, up to double knitting for thick socks
What is your favorite type of yarn? Can't decide between wool with a little Nylon, or pure cotton, or maybe crossbred wool.
Do you prefer circular or double pointed? Double pointed.
What is the make of your favorite needle? Don't have one.
Where do you get your yarn? I make my own sometimes, but seek out suitable yarns all the time. I use lots of yarn.
How long have you been knitting? Just about 50 years
Do you use the English or Continental Style of knitting? English
( For non-knitters English or Continental or different way to hold the yarn that is to be knit.)

Do you would you knit hose for others (X-Markers)?I don't, as I don't have the time even to knit for myself. I could help with devising patterns or knitting methods.

I usually knit toe up as I like the way the shaping can be done, and that way I can try on the sock as it is knitted, and put all the yarn into the socks. I knit from opposite ends of the ball of yarn, and keep going until it is just about all used.

I usually make a left and a right shaped sock.

Hello all, this is Matt's wife Joannie. He told me about this thread and I thought I'd post since I'm working on my third pair of hose. My first pair was too small for Matt but, bless his heart, he still wears them. The second pair fit great. I started another pair on 2 circular needles but set them aside to work on the pair he REALLY wanted.

What is your favorite size needles? size 8. I've read you should use smaller needles than the yarn calls for so that your socks are more dense but I don't want to.

What is your favorite size yarn? Medium weight, size 4 yarn. I knit it at 5 or 6 st/in on my size 8 DPNs.

What is your favorite type of yarn? I've only used Lion Brand's wool-ease. It comes in a variety of colors, knits easily, and washes well.

Do you prefer circular or double pointed? I prefer DPNs b/c that's what I learned on. I've never had trouble with all the needles (I use 4 for the socks and knit with a 5th) or "ladders" between needles. But I'm learning to do two socks at once on two circular needles. I like the idea of finishing both socks at the same time but right now it's a lot slower than DPNs.

What is the make of your favorite needle? My DPNs are aluminum, but my circs are bamboo. Both kinds have advantages and disadvantages for different yarns and applications.

Where do you get your yarn? I order the Lion Brand yarn from the web site. I get all my other yarn from my LYS b/c she carries really cool, unusual yarns.

How long have you been knitting? I've known how since I was about 10 but I've only been seriously knitting for about 5 years or so. I also crochet.

Do you use the English or Continental Style of knitting? English (in that I hold my yarn in my right hand), but I don't wrap my yarn around my fingers. And when I work with two colors, I hold both in my right hand, rather than one in each hand as is usually recommended.

Would you knit hose for others (X-Markers)? I have very limited knitting time b/c I have four very small children. It would take me so long to make a pair of hose for someone else, they'd be better of learning to knit and making their own. Knitting is the best hobby ever!

Toe up or cuff down? Cuff down but I'm going to learn toe up one of these days.

No one else mentioned it but I also prefer an afterthought heel, rather than the standard gusset and heel flap. It'll be easier to mend when the time comes, and it's a whole lot easier to knit.

What is your favorite size needles?
It depends on the size of the yarn. Usually size 1 for regular socks. The one pair of kilt hose I knit were done on size 2 with worsted weight yarn.

What is your favorite size yarn?
For socks, I usually use sock/fingering weight.

What is your favorite type of yarn?
    I prefer wool.

Do you prefer circular or double pointed?
DPNs. I haven't tried circulars yet.

What is the make of your favorite needle?
Gotta be bamboo. Some materials do work better for different fibers. Right now I have a cotton wool blend going on aluminum.

Where do you get your yarn?
LYS, JoAnns, and another big craft store type place

How long have your been knitting?
    Since Feb 2007

Do you use the English or Continental Style of knitting?
English, but left handed and in reverse.
( For non-knitters English or Continental or different way to hold the yarn that is to be knit.)

Do you would you knit hose for others (X-Markers)?
I would consider it if I had the time, but I need to finish two hats, a sweater, the pair of socks currently on the needles, and a pair of hose for myself. Not easy working nights six days a week.

One advantage of toes up is you can try the hose on as knit.

And I disagree with you, the first pair were not too small Matt's feet were are large.

Size two with worsted wight must have been a very tight sock. How did it work?

What is your favorite type of yarn? wool

Do you prefer circular or double pointed? circular

What is the make of your favorite needle? Hiyaa Hiyaa, they are stainless steel with smooth joins. Great for people with nickel allergies.

Where do you get your yarn? Local yarn store, Knitpicks online

How long have your been knitting? over a year

Do you use the English or Continental Style of knitting? Continental

Do you would you knit hose for others (X-Markers)? Possibly, but need to get several more pairs of kilt hose under my belt. I dream of writing and publishing a book of kilt hose patterns.
