If it were me, I'd go ahead and get the mess jacket. As a retiree, you're authorized to wear your uniform for special occasions and events.

Nix on the SportKilt for sure - especially if you get the inexpensive gathered one...even paying for "pleats" there'll be a lot less than on a USA Kilts semi-traditional

Here's a pic of my USA Kilts polyviscose semi-trad in Army tartan...no way will you get pleats like that from even a "top of the line" SportKilt.

If the Army tartan kilt is meaningful to you, and you have the time to wait. Why not invest in a hand sewn wool?

This is my Leatherneck tartan hand sewn wool kilt. I went top of the line because of how meaningful the tartan is to me and my family.

Kathy Lare of Kathy's Kilts in Albuquerque sewed this one up, but there are many fine hand sewn kiltmakers to choose from.

Well I have decided to order the USA Semi Traditional kilt in US Army tartan, Prince Charlie Jacket with vest, white tuxedo shirt with black bow tie, semi-dress Black Sporran in rabbit fur, Black hose with either Gold or Green Flashes, and my miniature medals. The Patten leather low quarters will do fine for the ball.

Once I have everything assembled, I will make sure to take a picture for every ones approval and potential suggestions.

For a formal ball, I would definitely nix the Sportkilt.

Since it's a ball, I would recommend going for the full hand-sewn wool kilt. Alexis Malcolm did my US Army tartan kilt and did a great job.
