    Just acquired...

    ...a 22" 4 harness, 4 treadle floor loom.

We got the thing for free, so I have no documentation at all on how to use it. Along with that, it's missing the shuttle. We aren't certain if it is missing anything else.
We had to take it, though. The price was perfect: FREE!!

As soon as I figure out how to use it, I'm hoping to try my hands at weaving my own tartan material.

Then by all means, someone contact me by PM or e-mail and help me out. I'm guessing it's this model Harrisville Designs. From the photo at that page, I'm guessing it's missing the piece that pushes the warp back after sliding the shuttle through the weft.

Bear with me as I learn the vernacular.

I think that would work for twill weave, but I'm not sure what would be doable on the missing shuttle. I would guess that you could look it up on the web. It's been a long long time and hard to remember. Good luck and congratulations.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I need to do a little research. I've seen a model similar to what I have in use before, and what was coming off that loom looked more like a rug than usable kilting material. I need to learn different uses for the thing.

As for the shuttle... the bride and I have been looking on the Harrisville Designs website, and they seem to have some items worth looking into. We'll just have to wait and see what we can learn.

Leclerc is a good shuttle company.
You can easily do twill with 4 harnesses. You will only need 4 of the treadles for the twill. You can leave the other two loose or set them up for tabby weave.

Tartan material is usually larger than the 22" width. For instance, you will need your drop + rise (2") + top band (1.5").

There is a method to weave double length. Others will have to help you there.

You will need 48 threads per inch for a heavy weight tartan. Typically the yarn you will need is 2/22. I would suggest you start with some tartan color cotton for your first project(s) and use heavier yarn to get into the swing of things.

It's funny you say it looked like a rug because that's what I worked on when I did the little bit of weaving growing up. I'm racking my brains for the terms too, but there should be a beater thingy that pushes the wep up and kind of packes it. That is a very important part and I hope you have it. Well, unless I'm thinking of a different kind of loom. What do I know. Good luck, and have fun.
Oh wait, I think I am thinking of a different loom because you have four harnesses and hedle thingys. Sorry nevermind.

What a deal. You'll be able to source or make all the parts you need. Pictures please.

Maybe you mean that you are missing the reed? It mounts on the beater bar and spaces the yarn for the warp.

best thing to do is find a local weaving instructor or shop and have them give it the once over they should be able to give you a list of items needed and a few instructions as you go...I just finished my first tartan and I also only have a 22" loom, it is not wide enough with my set up to do a proper tartan width so we are looking to widen it. just be careful it is a very addictive habit.
