I've done this type of thing several times with different items.

One of the things that I hit upon to use for "push pin" backs are strudy industrial strength thumb tacks. They have nice big backs that take epoxy well, after being roughed up with a file or sand paper. I then put plenty of epoxy under and over the tacks and use generic clutch backs.

Works well for me.
