Dave, nice pin. Is it not a Celtic wild goose rather than a dove?
Can't be a goose because it has a beak like a dove
a goose has more of bill like a duck

It wasn't meant to be a challenge. Just letting Dave know who does good pewter crafting in case he decides to have a kilt pin custom made.

I already saved the pic before your post. The wheels were already turning. I was hoping somebody would pick up the gauntlet and make it official.

Okay, I'll throw down the gauntlet. What can you do for me?

    Gents,

Keep in mind if Dave found this only in one place, it could be an original creation of the silversmith.

Think about how we would feel if someone was trying to blantantly copy Rab Gordon's knife handle designs? Or a T-Shirt from Rocky? Or Stillwater's Nightstalker sporran?

Just a quick reminder from your Kilted Conscience

    Respectfully

Exactly my thoughts but Panache said it better than I would have.

I had a copy of an antique pin made, but I needed to change it, so I added a stone to it to make it different. I'm not selling it, (manufacturnig) and it cost more that the pin would have cost me if I had jumped on it when I first saw it.

That design is from a manuscript that is 1200 years old. Current copyright is life of the author plus 70 years. Renditions of the art in various forms is public domain. My Daughter has that dove in her Book of Kells coloring book.

I agree it would be wrong to "make a copy of someone elses work and sell it as your own". The reason you see so many zoomorphic designs, that are original yet alike, at the games is that they are mostly taken from the old illuminated manuscripts.

    O'Neille,

No offense was intended. The design appears to be fair game and I'm sure you will render it with your usual (unusual) brilliance. We sometimes get a bit carried away here at XMTS. A reminder of respecting efforts of others and not blantantly ripping off someone else's idea or product is a good thing.

After all we are the Ladies and Gentlemen of X Marks the Scot.

    Cheers

No offense taken. If I hadn't previously seen the original artwork, I might have thought it was an original design. It is certainly a unique interpretation of the original itself.
