Finally started a kilt and mostly finished
So, I finally turned into enough of a fabric slut to win an e-bay auction of eight yards of herringbone tweed, 100 percent wool, 29" wide. Hey, says I, to myself, eight yards of wool that's 29" wide! That there sounds like you could chisel off some material and have yourself a kilt.
So I did.
Of course the herringbone chevrons are running sideways. I could have "cut'n'pasted" the material so that the chevrons were vertical, but that would have taken too much sewing, and I figured that first time out you get a pass on details.
The material has brown threads running through it creating a windowpane pane pattern of about 2 1/4" so I just lined up the brown lines. It's a knife pleat, 4 1/2" pleats with 2 1/4" reveals, very primitive. Hand sewn with Coats upholstery thread, which is what I had on hand.
Pleats are all done, the apron and underapron need finishing, and the waistband needs to be sewn in.
With any luck at all, it's what I'll be wearing to the Kilt Night at the Tilted Kilt later this week, and then there should be pictures!
Woot!

Not to worry about the side-ways chevrons - they'll look fine, when you are drunk and horizontal

Was that the term about which Alan H was teasing us with clues? If so, welcome to the addiction!

Most assuredly. But then, you'll have the details mastered by the time you make your eighth, tenth, or twelfth kilt.

Without a doubt, it will be one of your favorite kilts. You'll reach for it with no worry or pause when a garment built for abuse... er, ruggedness... is needed.

Yup, there should be. Just make sure they're family forum friendly!

***busting a gut here***
Yes, that's the term I gracefully avoided using, but I and some of my lady quilting friends use it all the time. I have to fight being a fabric...uhhhhh......YOU know... "maven"..all the time. Fabric calls to me. I'm better at it than my friends Laurel and Connee, who both have closets FULL of cloth, in boxes. I just have, uh... um.
Well, not as much as way2fractious!
