Personally, I have a dummy sgian dubh that I can wear for times when I don't think a blade is worth any potential trouble. It looks really good, and I haven't had anyone ask to see the blade.

It depends on why you are wearing it. If it's just for a bit of decoration, why not? I really can't think of any need for a real blade when I'm dressed formally. In fact, sometimes I don't even use the dummy sgian; I just go without.

MacMillan you are absolutely correct. Unfortunately a gentleman with a sgian dubh is apparently looked at with as much suspicion as...oh never mind I'm not going there.

Anyway they can get a bit paranoid in NY so it is one reason I don't sharpen all my formal sgian dubhs. Unfortunately I have not found a "safety" sgian that I think looks proper so I contacted Rab Gordon about making one.

What I'm thinking is since I would only care what is shown above the hose I would have the bottom designed so that is was as comfortable as possible against the leg. This may give it a slightly odd shape, but it will be covered by the hose and if you are asked it will be obvious it isn't a blade. Anyway, we'll see what comes of it. Right now at times I am forced to go without because certain hotels etc. in NY will not let you enter even if it has a dull blade.

Yes, I commiserate! Half the time I don't bother with wearing a sgian dubh-- and since I was burgled, until I get a really nice Edwardian or Victorian one, it's really a moot point. I wonder? does anyone make a cigar tube that would look appropriate?

    JUST KIDDING GUYS!!!!!!

Actually I've seen several that opened to reveal a small comb, which is much more useful if you have a moustache! And, since a knife seems to be verboten in some jurisdictions, how about a spoon?

And if you want it to be a formal one just glue a cairngorm to your leg with a bit of spirit gum.

Thanks all for the great advice. I think I'll take both and try for the formal, if it falls through I'll have the dummy. Besides, if I wanted to take the easy route I wouldn't be taking the kilt in the first place, right?
