Star Trek XI
Rather than hijack Panache's earlier thread about the original Star Trek, I thought I'd start one on the new Star Trek movie.
I saw a picture of the movie Enterprise today, and the teaser. Some thoughts: for me, the Enterprise makes or breaks this movie. If they disrespect that lady, I will be seriously, terribly dissapointed. Now, of course, this ship is from 2245, twenty years before TOS and there were at least two refits between "The Cage" and the normal run Star Trek episodes, so if the old girl doesn't look exactly the same, I'll be dissapointed but more understanding.
The problem is, is this "reimagining" or reboot meant to basically undo everything from the original series? Is it starting over from a clean slate? That is what bothers me, the sort of "Oh, they would have done it this way in the 60s if they had had our technology" attitude. As La Forge said to Scotty in "Relics", just because something's old, doesn't mean you throw it away." As has been said elsewhere, even that prime example of retconning, "ST:Enterprise" didn't have the nerve to redesign the USS Defiant.
But, there is a silver lining. I was glad to hear Nimoy recite "Space, the final frontier..." in the trailer, and to hear Courage's excellent theme. It'll be interesting to see how things go.

I will be disappointed if they try to rewrite the history of the show.
Christopher Pike was Captain of the Enterprise before Kirk (and Captain Robert April before him).
Spock served with Captain Christopher Pike for some seven years before Kirk.
One of Kirk's first assignments was aboard the Farragut.
They need to bring the history to the screen not rewrite it.
Cheers

Exactly. I watched a parody on YouTube on if George Lucas were to direct Lord of the Rings. I think the best part of it was Lucas saying, "Well, I respect Tolkien as a writer, but, well, he didn't tell The Lord of the Rings that way I would have". It then goes on to lampoon Lucas in a, dare I say it, epic fashion. I hope that Abramswill more than just respect Rodenberry as a writer.
I remember hearing that Spock may have served with Pike for 11 years, one five year mission, one year refitting Enterprise, and another 5 year mission. I don't know if that was ever canon, though.

I was going by "The Menagerie" which we just watched where he states it was seven years, some months, and this many days.
"Courtmartial" and "Obssession" had some details on young ensign kirk as I recall.

Shouldn't that be TAMGKAK?
I would not want to try and fill those shoes.
