That is a high waist. I wear most of my kilts high as well. I found they stay put that way. Also wearing them high helps hide my extra large girth.

I can relate. My favorite kilt is a haigh waisted Canadian military issue Black Watch, for that exact reason.
Yes, in normal light, the red stripe does stand out. BUT in the sunshine, it is the light blue stripe that "dominates",It becomes almost "fluorescent" & is the feature almost always commented on.
As to the "very" high waist., after a lot of research, Patrick, decided that this was what was needed. ( parameters were, 1800-1812.- to be worn with a Coatee style coat (like the uniform coat) or a "tail coat. With or with out a "vest.

Huh? That's the first time I've ever seen that Douglas tartan, the white is absent.

If you mean, by "Douglas" the "current Douglas', then I can see the ???
The Black Douglas' are desended from Sir James Douglas, (the Bruce's Lt.) They were the most powerful clan in Scotland until James II murdered the 8th earl in 1452 & the defeated them @ Arkinholm. James then gave the "Lordship" to the Earl of Agnus ( a "Red" Douglas & Highlander ) NOTE, the Blk. Douglas' were Lowlanders ( as was The Bruce & Wallace)
The Black Douglas' are a "Armigerous Clan" ( no Chief.) Also we never a had a "Tartan" + my relatives were "Reivers"
The Tartan # is 1029 & is "modern" I wear it to "honor" my past + I LOVE it. Thankfully, even us "Lowlanders can wear the tartan, without qualms

As one of our Mackay pipers from Seattle wears North Channel Kilts & I've seen it in person, I too can attest to his work.
Love the second photo, even if it is a wee bit out of focus.
