Tartan Tweeds
Hamish is currently getting a lot of compliments on his new tweed kilt from Redshanks Scotland (see this thread). So I thought I'd take the opportunity to let the rabble know about a new offering I'm proud to add to my kilt range.
Thanks to a wonderful offer by Redshanks, I am able to supply my four yard box pleated kilts made from Harris Tweed cloth that Redshanks specially commissioned in a small range of tartans. Right now, that includes Campbell ancient, Campbell weathered, MacDonald of the Isles red, MacDonald of the Isles hunting, MacGregor hunting, and Isle of Skye.
You can see images of any of the above here:
http://kilts.albanach.org/tweeds.html
Price for these will be the same as for my kilts from custom cloth (i.e. $480 for a four yard kilt). I'm very excited about this new tartan tweed range. For any of you who have been thinking about a tweed kilt, but don't like non-tartan kilts, this is for you!
Note that I'm still offering my kilts in Catherine Campbell's Harris tweed range at $350 -- she has recently told me to expect some swatches in the mail of some new patterns she has available, so watch the site to see when those are added.

Oh wow. I think I'll have to get one in the Macdonald of the isles red.
And the Isle of Skye. That is even nicer than the regular Isle of Skye.

Oooooo this is killing me. I REALLY want a tweed kilt.
In actuality what I really really want is a tweed kilt suit.

Well, guess my Dad was right - No matter how many times you look at your wallet, the money in there never grows.
Tell you what Matt: Keep those Tweed Tartan's on the site for, say, 3-6 years, and I'll get one. How's that sound?
But in all seriousness, those are pretty amazing.

**Stares at wallet** *looks away from wallet* *quickly looks back at wallet* *yes, there is enough money in there** * Examines wish list** **mentally re-shuffles list** **re-examines list** Discovers that a tweed kilt is no where near the top** Heavy sigh** **thinks it's neat to have so many options** **goes back to trying to decide which tartan for the new Tewksbury, or Catanach, or Lare, or Newsome, or - - - -??? ** **this is too much like work**
Thanks Matt, it's great to have more options!

Matt, those are beautiful, but I'm wondering something. Would the tweed be more historically accurate than worsted wool, or is worsted how kilts were always made?
Either way, they look very handsome and makes me wish I had the money to get one.

Both. Most of your kilt cloth was a hard worsted tartan, historically, but tweeds have been popular at certain times, as well. They were much more popular in the nineteenth century than now, though I think they may be making a come back.

They look very nice indeed. I'm looking forward to seeing some kilts.

Thanks for the link Matt, you have some wonderful fabrics there. What strikes me about Ham's tweed are the rather large cream and gray (on my monitor) overchecks. They suggest a tartan like pattern while still remaining tweed to the core - if that makes any sense. I sure would like to find some similar wool fabrics to whip into a kilt!
