Frugal Corner has ISLE OF SKYE!!!!!

I'm just the messenger...I saw it, I reported it...I know lots of folks here have mentioned loving that particular tartan and some of us have ancestry from Isle of Skye, so it really caught my eye!

As for licensing, etc., I wouldn't think you could sell it if it hadn't been properly arranged.

MacHummel, did you guys have to have a message on your site stating the it is trademarked/copyrighted, etc?

I know Stillwater has a message of some sort regarding their Irish National, but I don't know if that is required or if they want people to know that it is the real thing?

I took a look at the site and though Isle of Skye was listed as currently in stock, there was no picture of it.

Jerry over at Stillwater kilts has an agreement with the House of Edgar to offer their trademarked Irish National Tartan™ in acrylic. He very clearly notes that at the Stillwater website.

Those interested in the Frugal Corner Isle of Skye kilts/ fabrics should contact the Frugal Corner and ask if they have an arrangement with the copyright holders and if they would be willing to note that on thier website.

It may very well be that the Frugal Corner has made such an arrangement and that they are paying the royalties for the name and tartan. As lovely as the tartan is, I myself would want to have assurances that everything was on the up and up before buying.

Boy, talk about blind faith. They just have the words Isle of Skye up there, no pic of their tartan yet so no telling if it the same as what is patented or a slight variation.

I didn't see any indication of the tartan being owned by the lady who created it.

On the other hand their Loud MacLeod is at least more accurate than the Marton Mills Loud MacLeod which has some elongated black squares rather than all equal black squares...so maybe they got it correct.

If the mill that made the cloth is overseas who'd enforce the patent for the lady?

For me, Isle of Skye was such an important tartan for me I went with the Lochcarron 16 ounce and had it hand sewn. Expensive, but very very beautiful.

This is the exact reason I ordered my Isle of Skye kilt through a reputable tartan shop near me, where I could see the tartan. Another concern I would have with ordering besides the wait time and the licensing is the fact that it is an acrylic fiber kilt, and I am just not sure that acrylic could convey the subtlety that is inherent to the Isle of Skye tartan.

I'm definitely not interested as I think (from experience unfortunately) acrylic makes a

oop: kilt. But, I'm interested to know if the appropriate licensing has been taken care of...

I don't think...and I know NOTHING, exactly NOTHING about this...but I don't think that in fact it would be Frugal Corner that would be paying a licensing fee to whoever owns the tartan. I think it would be the weaver, which I assume is in Indonesia or Pakistan or wherever.

This makes me leery of purchasing the stuff. I have no doubt that Marton Mills would pay such a fee and pass it on to whomever ordered IoS from them. After all, they're in Scotland and are probably personally acquainted with the designer/trade owner. That might not be true of some mill on the other side of the world.

I, myself would be content with Frugal Corners word of honor that they'd investigated this aspect of the tartan and were convinced that it was woven with the proper licensing.

However, I tend to agree that IoS will look a lot better in wool.
