Why do firemen wear red suspenders?
To hold their pants up!
Seriously, I suppose that your wife was asking if the ribbons had any kind of symbolic meaning and there's been a lot of discussion about that here before. There's some business about whether the ribbons are tied or hanging loose having to do with being married or single. Guess which is which?

There is also one I've heard more than once that says "Highlanders - tied / Lowlanders - loose".
Don't know where that came from, but on the other Big Mikey is correct.

Thanks for you answers guys. I had a black beret that had a cord in the hat band for adjusting the fit. One the perfect fit was acheived the loose ends where cut off. Looks like the ribbons on my bal will be coming off this weekend.

It's your hat to vandalize as you please, but the ribbons really are part of the fashion of the thing. Please reconsider!

Big Mikey did say it all. Eighteenth century "one size fits all".

Oh, please don't cut 'em off. Tie them into a neat bow, put a thread through the cent of the knot to keep it there, and then trim the ends on the bias to make it look good.
It should look something like a neat bow tie when you're done. You can look here to see one pre-tied http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ayphotohosting, but I like the look of a real ribbon that is tied and hangs down just a little.

And what do you do when the headband stretches, or some lass compliments your kilt? Keep the ribbons for future adjustment and when the wife's not around let the puppies blow in the wind .

Mine too, but the turnouts are yellow. When we had black turnouts mine were red.
