Boot/Moc Conversion
In the "Kilt accessories" Section, we had a discussion on "boots" I mentioned that I had coveted a pair of ankle hight boots/mocs into knee high "Canadians" I was asked what I did, so here it is.
I. Start with a GOOD ankle high boot'moc. Here are 2 suppliers that IMHO are TOPS.
http://www.arrowmoc.com/mocasins.html
http://www.carldyers.com/
NOTE - The boots'mocs I have are ARROW, but Dyers are VERY GOOD, But $$$$
As you can see from the sites you have a good selection of styles.
II. Pics
III. Material list ( Tops)-
a. Hide (mine is Elk, but any hide will work that is "flexible enough to WRAP. BUT I do not recommend Deer, antelope etc or Thinner "suede" (yes you can leave "fur on., also, in my case I used a hide that had "a couple of bullet holes in it {.62 cal if I recall))
Hight = 15"-18" (depending on your Hight & how high you want them ) this meas. is from the ANKLE BONE to the hight you want.
Width = 24"++ ( this depends on the GIRTH of your calves") Meas. @ "thickest part.
b. GOOD heavy thread ( I use a waxed linen, but others mat be used (suggest check with someone like Tandy)
IV. Pattern - NOTE I used heavy paper to lay out the pattern FIRST
Note these meas. are based on my "profile ( calf = 13 1/2" & hight (ankle bone to mid knee) 17"
a. Inside flap = Hight = 14" (compare with overall hight below)
Width = 8 1/2" (the inner flap goes from 3'4s of the outside of the calf to 3'4s of the outside (centering on the "shin bone)
b. REMAINDER = Note mine come to mid knee. (top wraping "LACES" are tied @ the bottom the knee & the remainder of the "top "hangs loose. Also I left the "top rough for a "primative look"
Hight 18" Width = 23" (again left "ragged)
c. LACES = 1'2" x 58' ( elk) (4 )
d. Front Flap ( covers "basic boot laces) 3 3/4" wide X 5" high (top of curve)
V. ASSEMBLY =
1. TOP =
a. SEE PICS for positioning of top.
b. Stitch bottom of the top (as in the pics)
c. GLUE the remainder of the top that contacts the basic boot
2. LACES (4 of each) = Make an Attatchment piece out of HEAVY leather ( a piece of an old belt works GOOD) 1" wide x 1 1'2" high. Cut a slit in it so you can pass the lace through. ( as time goes on the laces may break & this way you can replace them) Stitch the "attatchment" to the basic boot as shown in the pics. Cut a slit in the bottom of the lace, thread the lace through the "attatchment", then through thr slit in the lace. DUPLICATE on the other side.
3. Front Flap = Stitch & glue bottom of flap to basic boot ( see pic for positioning. Punch 2 holes for boot lace to pss throuh ( note the positio is fot the top lace)
4. ENJOY
Did I forget anything ????
Use your imagination & personal preferences to design ( Leather choices, color, hight, primative or dressier, etc.

Added note, I forgot
You can make the tops & NOT attatch them to the boot. ( same idea as Putees or leggings) I "fixed the laces to the Tops (same way as They are on the above) so they would not get lost.) on a set I made for a friend as a gift, using a Bear hide.
Wish I had a pic, SORRY

As is, they are good for late spring to early fall in the PNW.
Being from the PNW, I "LAYER" as needed( heavy sox, Innersole made of a good carpet under layment (scrap) Bootie ( knee high) made out of an old US Army blanket (good to freezing - mid 20s, for me) NOTE note with a kilt @ the lower temps, my Knobby knees FREEZE
For COLD = Buy boot with REAL wool Fleece ( or buy the boot larger & line yoursef ) & line top with the same. I have friends who have these & wear then reg. in the Mtn.s ( try the ROCKIES, etc ) well bellow ZERO & claim they are toasty. Me I wear good inulated boots with good "treads"( HATE falling on my ****.

Wow, Arrow Mocs, brings back memories!
I grew up in Hudson where they are made and sold.
Arrow Mocs were a favorite of the "burn outs" aka "stoners", you know hardcore pot smokers.
Never had a pair myself, never considered myself "hardcore" but now can appreciate the quality of footwear.
