I'm an 18th century guy born into the 20th century and have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

I was given some scrap pewter by a local pewter crafter. Try to find someone who uses sheet pewter to press into their products rather than one who buys ingots and casts. They'll probably collect the sheet edge scraps for selling back to their supplier and will part with it fairly easily. At least that's the deal I lucked into.
Aside from that you'll need a container that will withstand heating and a propane torch. A steel soup can and a pair of vice grips would work, but be very careful with molten metal.
Not a job to do while kilted!
And here's another thread with instructions and photos.
