I must be weird, but I can see how, in his mind, it was a funny statement.
I actually got a little chuckle out of it.

And the two escapees couldn't understand you if you used proper English anyway. While in the Air Force I spent a tour in the U.K., then came home on leave, and promptly messed up the minds of the locals at the neighbourhood bar, by speaking real English. They never even got to bother me about the kilt.

I was at a wedding this past weekend (alas, not kilted). My date intorduced me to her elderly aunt. She then explained to her aunt that I was of Scots origin and that I regularly wear a kilt.
Auntie told me with authority that the Scots wear sporrans to hide their erections.
I was speechless.
I thought it was a place to stash my flask and cash, but apparently not.

A lot of Highland Games in Texas are located in small towns. You'd think the whole town would be aware of an event that would pull in 15 to 20,000 people every year when the town's population is just 2 thousand. Well, after the first day, I went to the grocery thinking no one would give me a second look. Sure enough, a man stops me and asks why I'm wearing a kilt. The store is right next door to the games field with flags flying and signs all over.

See, this is the sort of thing that I would never get to experience if I were kilted. I doubt anyone would bat an eye. Good on ya for spreadin' the stories, gents! You're definitely adding some fun to my afternoon.

Well, depending on where in Ireland you go it can be hard to tell one way or the other.
I get the Irish comments and questions as often as the Scottish ones, but at least they're close.
One girl asked me "is that... Irish?" referring to my black sk, and being a mischievous little b@$!@%& I told her "no, actually it's Japanese" "Really?" "Oh yeah, they're really popular over there." I went on to explain that the Japanese are always a few years ahead of us and that it wouldn't be long before everyone over here was wearing one. I still can't believe she bought it.
After reading a few of these stories all I could think of was Jim Gaffigan's bit about easter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjJCIbC9sxA&NR=1
