you are wrong, they may have pockets and should be much more fitted to the individual. They are high waisted but are fitted not just like Grandad pants!!

Trews are of a style of trousers fashionable in the early 19thC. All of the CW reenactors here, think of your sky blues. They are high waisted. worn with suspenders, no rear pockets. They mark the first deviation from fall front pants like britches and button front trousers. This style was common even into the early 20thC (hence the Grandad, Old Man, Pepe Pants) and were intended to be worn with a vest or waistcoat. Wool was the material of choice because it was readily available, easily manufactured, comfortable, and wore like iron.
It's too early in the morning to into too much detail (you all can be thankful for that!) but fashion history is a fascinating subject.

One of the members of my band wears them for formal wear, we do 19thC music, and they really look sharp. The only reason I don't own a pair is because he bought them before I saw them!

We were in Gettysburg in a junk/thrift store. He's the kind of guy who will walk into a place follow you, and pick up the ultra rare 15thC pistol and sword combo for $20 that wasn't there when you looked right at it I hate people like that. Sorry I couldn't be more help than that.

I can recommend the wearing of properly "cut" trews, they are a very elegant way of a variation on the tartan theme.A word of advice though.Wear "chelsea" type boots or the trews will not hang properly.
