I don't want to spoil the fun here, but in support of the "modern-things-with-pockets-and such"...they were invented in the WWI trenches...nothing new about them and worn by Scots and Canadians for practical reasons.

I get really ticked off. I even fail to see the point in buy any kilt just because you like the color. To wear kilt is to show pride not a fashion choice .

do you also get ticked off when someone wears a particular jersey from a sports team, but doesn't live in the city where the team plays, let alone play for the team? do you also get ticked off when people paint their homes in a color you don't like? what else about other people angers you? music choice? hair style? skin color?

i wear the kilt of my choosing (tartan or not) because I alone get to decide MY aesthetic.

i'll be the one to make the statement (and face the punishment be it so determined) but to believe that any person should have an aesthetic that agrees with your judgment is plain and simple bigotry.

The question might have been better phrased:

"As someone who only wears a traditional kilt in tartans with meaning to me I am interested in the appeal to others of Modern kilts or wearing of tartan (or other types) of traditional kilts as just a fashion preference Please share your thoughts."

So the Mods don't have to shut the thread down I'd appreciate it if everyone took this as the starting point of this discussion.

OK, so back on topic. Why do I wear a kilt?
- Comfortable (I like the freedom and how things 'air out')
- Cool looking
- Great conversation starter
- Ladies seem to like them

Why a UK? It is Practical. Pockets are convent and cotton washes easier than wool.

Why not my Clan MacFarlane tartan? It is a somewhat rare tartan. As such, I am mostly limited to an expensive custom job. One day I will save my dimes and get one; but for now I will stick with more generic patterns and solids.

First let me begin by stating that Mr. Newsome you are someone I truly respect. I have to take time to really reflect now upon what I said. To answer your question no these listed pictures I do not take offense to. I was refering to others. I am trying to watch how I word things because I know I am walking on a thin line here. The kilts and prints I was refering to is the utility kilts with cargo pockets in a veriety of colors. I believe I mentioned the one sold at Hot Topic as well.

Thanks for clarifying your position. Saying "I don't like Utilikilts or kilts with cargo pockets" is fine. This is more specific than your original posts, which seemed to indicate disfavor of anything other than a kilt worn in the correct clan tartan.

It's also fine to say you don't like solid kilts at all. It would be perfectly legitimate for one not to favor the style of kilts worn by the USMC pipe band or the London Scottish, for instance. What kilt to wear is essentially a personal decision and each will have their own tastes and preferences.

There is a difference, though, between not liking a particular fashion and condemning those who do like that fashion.

Frankly, I agree with you in that I don't like Utilikilts. Why? Primarily I just don't like the way they look. It's about that simple. Not my thing. So I just don't hang out here in the "Contemporary & Non-traditional kilts" category. No big deal.

But if you do come here and post a question asking why people choose to wear this style of kilt.... well, expect their answers! :-)

There is no accounting for taste, which is what the fashion industry is all about. Just look around you-- it's not confined to wearing the kilt. Robin in his RKilt looks sharp-- it's not everyone's cuppa tea, but it isn't offensive either. Then go to your local mall and look at the guy with three inches of hairy belly showing between his jeans and tee shirt. You be the fashion police.

What I personally object to in any kilt is poor fit, poor workmanship, and the use of a fabric that is unsuitable to the kilt having the proper drape when worn. Sadly, massed produced kilts usually tick two, if not all three, of these boxes.
