All my shirt cuffs are fastened by cufflinks.I do not own a short sleeved shirt.I also use silver collar stiffeners too.The trouble with being born too soon,I suppose!

I must be old. I wouldn't consider dressing up formal or semi-formal without cuff links. I have many colours and metals with various stones to compliment my outfits. Some of my shirts have both button and/or holes. The longer cuff that folds back is a "French cuff"; I prefer them for formal. In the 70s, I had long sleeved shirts with holes for links, but now, my shirts with French cuffs have pleated fronts (white, royal blue, red, black).

As a dancer, I often have occasion to wear them.

When I wear a jabot I fasten it with collar studs front and back. In my Dad's day everyone wore shirts with detachable collars fixed with studs. The fold-over cuffs are a good idea - if they get dirty fold them over the other way and you've got clean cuffs again.

Wow! This thread took on a life of it's own. Thanks a lot, folks. I figured they were for something like that. All the shirts I have are button only in the cuffs, and I think I like it that way. I'll be passing on the cufflinks then.

Perhaps one day you will have a shirt that can accept cuff links, Nighthawk. Still think it's a neat thing to have them in your tartan. Take care friend.

Keep in mind that, just like you have to have the right kind of cuffs for cufflinks, your collars have to have the slots to accept the stays. Most dress shirts do, and generally come with their own plastic stays (which should come out before you send them out for laundering). I keep a supply of these at my desk just in case I forget to put mine in, but more often than not, it's my colleagues with the fly-away collars who borrow them.

About half of the dress shirts in my office-wear closet have French cuffs. Any major department store will carry an assortment in their men's department. Collecting cufflinks is almost as fun as collecting kilt pins. If you are hard to shop for (though what avid kilt wearer would be?), it gives your family and friends something to tasteful to give you on special occasions.
