Would definitely be easier to carve your own celtic knotwork and designs into than metal. Perfect for those who like to customize. But it seems you'd have to have a slightly bulkier sporran then overall I would think, with the wood requiring thicker pieces than what metal can be?

Agree - not because it's wood, but the way it's executed. I'd envision a nice hardwood, like cherry streamed into a curve so that when cut the grain runs arounf the curve. Then nice carving in the cantle and bosses. Even contrasing bosses. Even constrasting woods laminated and steamed into a curve. Lots of opportunity for the creative woodworker or carver.

Definitely steamed laminated wood, otherwise you're asking for a lot of wasted time when it breaks. The one in the photo is too plain for my taste...looks like an escapee from a childs toybox. Laminated with contrasting wood and/or carved and I'd reverse that opinion. I may try one of these myself!

For that matter, you could fashion a cantle out of laminated "tartan micarta" a la O'Neill!

Ooh! that idea gave me a tingle down my spine. Tartan cantles...I can almost smell the polyester resin.
