    Molded Sgian Dubh Sheath

I've been running the risk of slicing up my kilt hose when drawing or sheathing my sgian dubh. The stock sheath the at came with it did not do the job so here's what I replaced it with.

The knife is fairly top heavy, so I have to push it deep into the sock to hold firmly and not have the grip extending past my knee. In that position, there was close to 2" between the op of the sheath and the top of my sock. Now, with teh sheath extending from deep in the sock to the top, and a snug fit around the grip, the knife stays in place much better and less chance of slicing my hose. The formed opening also helps guide the blade in easier as well.

This wasn't too difficult of a project, just time consuming since you have to wait for the leather to dry and then stitching it together (broke several needles in the process). There was some spots on the leather that did not take the stain well, so I should have taken more time there to prepare the leather, but it will be in my sock so it will seldom be seen.

All in all, I'm much happier with this setup.

Thanks to Joe Gondek for the inspiration for this project.

I've done precisely the same thing for my store-bought & hand-made sgians. These well handcrafted items are too often supplied with mass-produced leather rubbish.

But - you know how frustrating it can be at times to pull out your sgian and sheath together?

I cut the back half with a tab that can be grabbed to facilitate an effortless removal from the hose of knife & sheath. The handle hides the tab from view.

I've illustrated what I mean with this graphic. Perhaps this is so obvious many others already do the same thing - but it sure works for me.

    Slainte yall,
