Maybe those clans that have many different tartans do this as a rule? Fly Plaid or hat or tie of a different tartan but the same clan? I don't know.

If we are talking about pre culloden era then it was long before clans had official clan tartans. What tartan you wore was more a function of what you could afford and what the local weavers could produce. Tartans made with imported dyes were a way to show off wealth.
