Hmmm, perhaps a solid color kilt could be tartanned up with a fly plaid. I think that would be fine, and I think it would be great to have a tartan hat. The point would be to have a splash of tartan to give a "Scottish" flavor or essence to the outfit. You could have Japanese coligraphy on a kilt pin for that matter. The solid color is a blank slate...
