Been going to church for years, studying for years and not once have I found a scripture stating a kilt was a womans garment.
Now, if I wore a dress, make up, pretended to ovulate, had a boyfriend named brick, and tried to convince people I was a woman,....then I could see his point.
Manly men wear manly things. Kilts being one of many garments. And just for the point of saying it, I'm a man in a skirt that loves woman. BOY HOWDY!

Note from the Mod Squad
Tread carefully and respectfully folks.
Ultimately the point here is noting that a kilt is a masculine garment. There are some people who are ignorant of this and see it as a feminine garb, and therefore the kilt wearer as cross dressing.
The kilt really doesn't really have anything to do with religious beliefs or one's sexuality.
Let's remain polite and respectful of each other.

No, I'm not a Jesuit, just a regular priest, but not ordained until I was thirty. My mother insisted I get out in the 'world' first. "So you don't get up there spouting opinions on things of which you know nothing, and embarrass me in front of the neighbors!".
So I worked in Factories & Warehouses; Sold shoes, even taught dancing at Fred Astair! Mum was right, the "World" was quite an eye-opener. I'm great at Confessions though - nothing shocks me-I've seen it all.

Different ethnic and socio-economic groups are going to have a different reaction to the kilt based on how familiar they are with things Scottish and their own perceptions of masculinity.
I do not immediately take offense at the word "skirt" being used by someone who simply doesn't know the proper word. Let's face it, kilts are skirts. I have had many people of Asian, South American, Middle Eastern, and Europeon backgrounds refer to my kilt as a skirt in a complimentary way. They are simply using the best word to describe the garment I am wearing. I do explain that it is called a kilt but take no offense. I do the same to those who almost get it right and call it a "quilt".
I have noticed that my kilt does tend to get the worst reactions from Mexican-Americans and African-Americans, though certainly there have been exceptions to this. I assume this has to do with hyper-defined concepts of masculinity and the aforementioned lack of knowledge about the garment /Scotland.
I do not permit myself to get especially bothered by this.
Last week I was at Target and an African-American man with long dreadlocks and multiple earings could barely contain his laughter at me as I walked down the aisle that he and a lady companion were at. This fellow probably weighed about 350 lbs and was clad in a t-shirt and sweatpants and was holding an aluminum cane.
What did I do?
I smiled at his companion, looked him in the eye and reached past him to pick up a package of cookies for my children with a polite "excuse me".
I then headed on my merry way.
His ignorance is not my problem.
As Sting once sang
"It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
be yourself no matter what they say"
Cheers

They laugh because they are ignorant. I laugh because it confuses them.
