I live in coastal North Carolina and have made two 11 oz kilts. The box pleat one is fine in hot weather provided there is no breeze. The knife pleat one is better in the breezes.

Overall, I will not make another out of 11oz material.

I am not a kilt maker but even as an "end user" I would think that weight too light and besides the public decency issues it wouldn't swing or swish very well.

7-8 ounce is awfully light....that's Sportkilt light.

I have made a number of 10-11 ounce kilts and I like them but I wouldn't go any lighter than that. There are drape and swing issues to consider.

BTW, in my experience, box pleat kilts benefit from heavier weight materials. An 8 ounce box pleats kilt is gonna have "issues", IMHO.
