Kilted With The President Of The Navajo Nation
Was a big day for me in terms of work bearing fruit. Years ago I was on the board of the Page Hospital District. We needed to expand our Emergency Department. I was honored to be chosen to make some trips inspecting other EDs and bring back ideas and suggestions. Today, the new hospital EDis near completion so it was blessed by Traditional Navajo medicine men. Joe Shirley, President of the Navajo Nation came up from Window Rock for the ceremony.
I'm currently on the board of our local Page Regional Domestic Violence Services. We worked years to convert a failed charter school into a 32 bed domestic violence shelter here in town. Then we took our old shelter trailer and moved it out onto the Navajo reservation in Le'Chee, AZ and converted it to office space (still keeping one bedroom for shelter space) for our Emergency Mobile Response Team and a local Navajo Nation Police office.
President Shirley was also present for that official opening today. For those scratching their heads, the Navajo Nation is probably the largest reservation in the U.S. extending into Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. There are about 250,000 enrolled members of the Navajo tribe. Page, Arizona, the little town where I live, borders the Navajo Nation.
Anyhow, PRDVS gives us purple polos with their logo and our "job" screened on them. They expect us to wear them to events like this. My first thought was to wear my Warrior tartan USA Kilts casual with purple Lewis kilt hose. But all three were a different shade of purple and its still a bit too cold for a casual kilt.
So decided to try the purple polo with my Isle of Skye and some green Lewis Kilt hose. Didn't get a pic at the gig so took one at home.
The pic with the President was indoors and too close to show the kilt. You can tell that I'm better fed than he is.
Purple is no fun to try and work with, but its the official color for domestic violence prevention efforts so I'm stuck with it.

I think you did a killer job with the purple, but in truth, when it comes to what you do that is of genuine improtance, you could have worn the worlds worst outfit, and you would still look like a star in my eyes- those are the eyes of a DV victim, by the way. My ex wife was very violent.

Ron - great combination. You are an example to us all, not just sartorially, but in your life.

On my last hike I climbed Mt. Taylor, the south "pillar" of the Navajo. I don't think I ever crossed Navajo land (though I looked out over plenty of it) but I did walk through Zuni and Acoma land, and El Malpais in New Mexico. Honestly it was a joy to be allowed to walk through their land.
By the way Ron, your purple shirt with the IOS kilt looks great. And what an honour to meet with President Shirley.
Andrew.
