When we go out it's for most of the day . We ski somewhere and make a fire grill some food and ski home again. I don't think the kilt would be ideal for that type of use .

We did about 10k (that's 6 miles for my southern neighbours ). My wool kilt worked out really well. It was a chilly day but my legs stayed warm. From time to time the wind whipped up and my upper body got cold but not my legs. No bonfires at this particular venue but I agree that a kilt may not be the ideal attire around the fire anyway.
Was Telemark the birthplace of X-country skiing?
