My wife and I found the trains very convenient in Scotland - frequent and on-time.

(Pitlochry station)

Besides a must-do visit to Dumfries, don't miss Pitlochry. It's a beautiful little town in a picturesque valley in the Highlands.

(Moulin - a wee village just outside Pitlochry)

Take a stroll through the woods, to the Black Spout and Edradour - Scotland's smallest distillery.

(The Black Spout)

(Scotland's smallest distillery - Edradour)

(The still)

If you feel like hiking further, take the road back into town to see even more beautiful scenery.

Eat lunch at the Moulin Inn, definitely.

(Walking back from Edradour; the road down to Moulin/Pitlochry)

(Moulin)

An hour or so of strolling up through the woods, past the Black Spout, to Edradour. An hour for the amusing distillery tour, and a sample or two (free of charge!). About 40 minutes back into town, with about that for a lunch at the wonderfully old Moulin Inn. All in all, a fine afternoon....
