Now that would be just plain tacky... I may have to do that!

Actually... coincidental to this conversation, I received a spectacular gift in the mail from my Aunt Cathy today- it's an 18 oz worstead day plaid in the Black Stewart tartan! How great is that?!?! She got it in Scotland something like 20 years ago. It's beautiful- and HEAVY! Nothin' like my 13 oz kilts. I just had to brag a little.

What, then, do the fellows in trousers wear for "formal" if not white tie, waist coat, and tails?

You are of course quite correct, white tie, white waistcoat and tails are worn together. As you say "formal" attire.

The trouble is, a PC is NOT the equivalent of white tie and tails. The PC is the equivalent of a dinner suit(tux) and as such,a black tie, usually a black waistcoat(never white), is correct.

Thanks for the clarification! I think that I have seen some reference to wearing the white pique shirt/tie/waistcoat with a PC, but I cannot remember where I may have read it.

Do I deduce that this would merit an immediate promotion to "certified numpty?"

Again I have to ask upon what authority this idea is based?

Surely it's chalk and cheese to compare what one needs to wear with trousers to be considered formal and what one wears with a kilt to be considered so.

Tuxes are boring and bland - a PC and kilt with all the other trimmings that can go with it never are. I would never decry doublets and jabots by any means but I simply cannot see how they are any more formal than a PC and especially when the PC is worn with a plaid.

    Chapter and verse please.
