I'll make your life a little easier. I'm probably already off your short list, because of the cost. If not, I will give you another reason to take me off your list.
I prefer the hemp to denim as it handles better, more swish, better durability, wrinkles less, and is softer. This comes at a cost, yes, but gives a better product in my opinion.
Both Steve and I, as well as Pete, use more fabric in our kilts. More pleats (less wrinkles better fit).
Much success in the search for a fine denim kilt.
    Cheers
    Robert

I also love my UK denim and I've been wearing it a lot.

If price wasn't a factor at all I'd love to own a few 21st Century denim kilts. I saw them when they were her in NY for Tartan week and it's really a fantastic product.

So, I looked into the practikilt, and in addition to being obvious knock offs of utilikilts they are also paper thin, poorly designed, and only come in a 21" length (nice as I think I'd look in a minikilt, I think I'll pass). So it's no wonder they aren't mentioned very often.

I'm really starting to kick myself for not ordering a denim Alphakilt in addition to the polycotton, as I could have gotten it wholesale. Of course, I didn't know at the time that I would want a denim kilt. And I didn't think I'd have the money. But still... In any case, I certainly won't be ordering another one from them until after I have the first one and can judge it myself.

I checked into union kilts, and they still have the light blue on the site with the closeout sale, but they are out of stock, so I 'm guessing that won't be an option. That's unfortunate as the exchange rate (and international shipping no doubt) makes the other denims far less competitive.

I'm conflicted when it comes to the utilikilt. On the one hand, I've heard nothing but good things from those who have them. On the other hand, I have trouble justifying the expense (particularly after the "fat bastard tax") when what I have always wanted is that black UK workman's, which is not that much more expensive. Of course, if the next best alternative is nearly the same price, I could probably get over it, it would just annoy me.

Alt kilt is fairly cheap compared to the others, but I'm not sure about the look. Maybe it's just the fact that the picture they have seems to show it on a female dummy, I don't know. Even so, she seems to be very open to custom jobs. Definitely worth considering.

I also just realized I could try a denim x-kilt. It'll be quite a while before I have the time, but my best friend just got a new sewing machine, so if I can finagle some time with that, it should be a lot easier. Granted, it would feel a little weird sewing a kilt with a hello kitty sewing machine, but if it saves me $100, I think I can live with that.
