***SELF CENTERED RANT***
I just want it *done*.
I've owed this very casual friend a kilt skirt since last summer. I shot my mouth off at a Ren Faire about saying "I'll make you a kilt" and I'm the kind of guy that does what I say I will do. ...even if I'm sick of it. I said I'd make her a kilt, she's getting a kilt. It will be wearable, if not elegant. To her, it's free, if she wears it once for 6 hours, then for every hour of construction time, she got an hour of wear-time out of it. If she wears it three times and throws it away, we're ahead of the game as far as I'm concerned. After all, the slapdash digicamo kilt I made last summer for the Hispanic guys in the Burrito Bistro has never, not ONCE been worn by the guy who got it. Not ONCE. What a total waste of my time.
This is one of those perfect examples of getting behind the 8-Ball. I tend to shoot my mouth off in enthusiasm..."Hey, I'll make you a kilt!". I do that 2-3 times and I get myself seriously behind in my commitments and then the pressure builds and kiltmaking becomes a lot less fun. I enjoyed making Panache's X-Kilt (so don't stress, James), and making TimC's X-Marks box pleat was fun ('cause the material was so good!), but the last two casual kilts have been a PITA. I finally bailed out on making a skirt for Kathy the guitar player in my band for Burns Night and just defaulted to buying one for $25 off of ebay. I just ran out of time and patience.
I have one more to go. I promised a kilt, four-five months ago, to the Korean faculty member in the building who is the most likely guy to actually WEAR one around here. Maybe he'll actually wear it, you know? Maybe. He's getting a desert digicamo 4-5 yard knife pleat.
I don't do this for a business. Kilt making should be fun, and when it's not, it's time to make a change. I need a break from kilt-making obligations for a long time.
I've got a big sailing race to prepare for, and I have tartan for two more kilts for myself and it's time that I make a nice kilt for ME, low-pressure, and just for fun. Crikey, I have had that Grey Stewart wool for almost nine months, now.

I know how you feel. I do amateur woodworking. When it starts feeling like work, I stop doing it for a while.

Definitely take a break, or at least make some for just yourself. I've stopped doing quite a few things I loved because they were no longer fun and I got burned out on them.
And I understand your frustration with trying to make something when you hate the fabric!

Hear, hear!!!! I've commited to making a cloak for my mother-in-law (in classic Disney Villain colors of black, red and purple) and a dress for my daughter (Snow White), and I just don't feel like sewing lately. Have to make my commitments, but then I want a long, long break!
Be well,

It's done, I mailed it off today. She swears she'll get pics, so I'll share when they come in.
