Alas the preview doesn't show any clips with kilts but looks like it could be a laugh in any case.

You have to look at the one in youtube. That clip shows that silly, little kilt. I can only assume that he wore a jockstrap under it.

I would assume from the mini-kilt is a simply for the laugh and it looked to me like the other kilts were being worn well. Although I think the groom was in a great kilt, which doesn't seems a bit eccentric, but we won't know until we see the movie.
I agree with others that this will probably be a nice "date night" with my wife

My wife and I own a Stag and we both almost cried when we saw that. What a waste of a good car... <sigh>

Well I actually watched this movie last night in my hotel room by mistake....ut all in all it was a good movie for what it is, a 'romantic comedy'
It is basically about this guy (Dempsey) which is best friends with this really cute girl (Monaghan), the girl takes a business/pleasure trip to Scotland (as she is of Scottish descent in the movie) for 2 weeks and while there, she meets this Scottish guy named Colin MacMurray of Atholl and they decide to get married.
The movie then moves from New York to Isle of Skye, where the scottish character lives in their castle (I think it is Eliean Donan Castle but dont hold me to it).
Anyway, the sets are actually in Scotland, the people are scottish, the highland games are authentic, the family wears Murray of Atholl tartan kilts for the wedding, etc.
All in all a refreshing movie, there are also a few scenes where the male scottish characters wear tweed kilts with their Argylles, etc.
And of course the funny bit when they try to humilliate Dempsey's character and they give him a mini kilt/skirt for him to wear at the highland games.
4 out of 5 haggis in my haggis scale.

Did that woman wear a Renaissance outfit to the Games? And could somebody explain why he's in a mini skirt?

I watched most of this movie while on a flight between D.C. and Houston, but didn't have the earphones in. It was ho-hum until I recognized the very place at which I ate dinner in Portree.

Does anybody know the plot element behind the short kit?

It sounds like it is clearly understood to the audience that the short kilt is inappropriate and is meant to be funny.
