CMH released a 3-volume set of their plates back in the ealry 80's; I believe our local public library has the first volume, and I know our library at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield has a set, so I'll see if it is there.

All,Thanks for all of the information and links. I have found over the posts that I might have to take up Scottish regiment print collecting. I really like the aesthetic and subject matter of most of them. Now I am going to have to start yet another fund! More links to them please!

This is one of those threads that really makes me happy to be here.
I have nothing to add--the amount of knowledge is astounding--so I just sit back and read what the other folks write.

Thanks for a very nice print, and thanks for some very interesting discussions.

Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton, 1739 - 1819. Soldier; Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire about 1780
 painted by John Singleton Copley

Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton (1739-1819) was a Scottish nobleman, politician and composer. In his youth, he served in the 77th Highlanders Regiment of the British Army, and saw action in the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Copley's portrait of him, though painted almost 20 years after the fact, shows him in full battle dress of the 77th Highlanders, the unit in which he served in America, and carrying a sword, on a background of a battle between the Highlanders and Cherokees, with the Highlanders victorious. The battle may be either the Battle of Etchocy (1760) or the Battle of War-Women's Creek (1761).
Returning to Britain, Montgomerie became a Member of Parliament for the Scottish region of Ayrshire, serving intermittently up until 1796. That year, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire. In 1798, after succeeding to the earldom, he was elected a representative peer and received a seat in the House of Lords. In 1806, he was created Baron Ardrossan in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. In 1814, he was made a Knight of the Thistle.

Here however is an example of an artist taking creative license with history. While he paints a (then) living figure, recreating a "moment" from his subjects life, he paints him dressed in a uniform (regimental coat, waistcoat & bonnet) that is contemporary & correct for the period this was painted -- 1780, NOT 1760-1761!

Otherwise its a great example of a military uniform circa 1780-81.
