Even though the difference between pressing and ironing has been mentioned, it rates repeating.

    Do not iron kilts!!!

Ironing would be placing the iron directly on the fabric and moving it around. DO NOT DO THIS!!!

    Alway press kilts.

Pressing utilizes a pressing cloth. Damp to wet, depending on your fabric. Carefully arrange the kilt, aligning everything as you want it, then apply the pressing cloth. Once the pressing cloth is on the fabric, you can apply the iron and then you can move it around, but gently. You do not want to stress the fabric. Press the kilt, don't iron it!!! Keep the pressing cloth damp, adjust the temperature. Steam irons are OK, but you will normally get enough steam from the wet pressing cloth. Some people recommend basting the kilt first, sometimes you can get away without it. You be the judge, it's your kilt. If in doubt, baste the kilt. It's better to take a little extra time, than ruin a kilt.

Another trick that works for me is to press the kilt when it too is still damp. Also don't forget the inside. This may seem silly, to press the inside, but the kilt will look better when you do the inside too.

I usually throw the canvas kilts into the
washer. So far, no ill effects. I can't say
for certain, though since it has only been
about three years of doing this, with about
    25 washings on each kilt.

For drying, I lay them flat on a formica
table top, align and flatten the pleats
and let it air dry. The pleats usually
don't need any ironing at all.

I machine wash my poly/cotton, PV, and poly/wool kilts, tumble dry on very low heat, and then press if needed. Repeated washings and no ill effects with any of these.

My 100% wool hiking kilt (used band kilt from eBay) was looking pretty dingy, so I used the cold tub technique with Woolite. After rinsing, squeezed as much water out as I could, then hung up to air dry, squeezing the lower edges a few times as water accumulated there. Pressed with a dry cloth while the wool was still damp. No shrinkage, no damage, colors are more vibrant than ever (it was used and probably never washed before I got it).

Yeah, it sometimes cracks me up when a group of us grown men are sitting around soliciting and giving advice about what color hose to wear, what accessories are appropriate, what kind of man-bag (i.e. sporran) is best, etc.

My wife points this out on a regular basis!
