The Flame-Haired Celtic Amazon Goddess took a look over my shoulder and says it some type of cat.

Right Jamie, my wife agrees and thinks it's the prints of a bobcat. There are no toenail holes in the snow/ice and the canine family can't retract their claws.

They sometimes hunt mice that are under the snow, then pounce...might make for the type of tracks you show (with no accompanying prey tracks.) My dogs love to do this in the tall grass.

My cats, I have six of them, do this to anything that moves. You can put your hand under a blanket and move it and they would pounce, for example. They seem to respond to sounds of scratching or movement in the same way.

All but one of them do quite a bit of hunting... The momma cat, she was a stray that had three kittens under my trailer a few years back, taught the kittens to hunt and the other stray showed up knowing. Now that I think about it, the little old grandma cat does a bit of hunting to, so all six are mousers. Keeps the scorpians under control.

I also recognised it as the tracks of one of the poosie people.

Last time I saw prints like that, though they were much smaller, it was my first cat - with round paws and short legs, typical English cat.

I was a bit perplexed as to why there was such concern about it - until I looked again and realised the ruler is in inches, not centimetres.

Yes, 2.54 aprox times makes a bit of a difference...

I'll also point out that domestic cats don't always fully retract their hind claws when they walk. I don't know about bobcats, but the slight claw marks that were pointed out would be more likely to show up in snow because of the depth of the impression.

On the other hand, it could be a chupacavra shape shifting into a bobcat...

I actually found werewolf tracks a few weeks ago. They started out looking like your basic canine tracks, but then they started stretching and growing, and then went onto the sidewalk.

Since one of my ancestors was a werewolf, I figure it might just be a distant relative.

He has really small feet then. Or he's about 9 years old.
