Don't give up just yet, a vest might be easier to alter than a jacket. Another option is a retro clothing store, a vest receives very little wear and tear over it's life. I would think that a vest at the back should just cover the top of the kilt rather than showing kilt, flash of shirt then vest. I feel that the front can cover the front by a couple of inches without affecting the sporran. Anymore than that I'd look for another vest. Another find would be a full bodied wool/tweed vest rather than tweed at the front and satin at the back. When I ordered my vest and Braemer from USAK I forgot to order my vest in full tweed. The extra cost would have been worth it.
