Tatter,
An intersting question. I'm also the Lead Advisor for a Venture Crew, son I'll be sure to check back on this question often. I'm not sure of the Scottish Scout tartan, but I do know that there is no official American Scout tartan. I have heard of scouters wearing the MacLaren tartan, but personally have no firsthand knowledge of this. Perhapse some of our Scotsmen who are/were scouts could help you out on this one.
BTW Welcome to the rabble!

Clan MacLaren of North America just came out with an article in the last newsletter that stated that a Scout or Scouter could wear the tartan of the individual's own clan or the MacLaren tartan. I disagree with the first to some degree because wearing your clan tartan would be no different from wearing blue jeans or slacks and not the BSA uniform pants... which is excepted but not preferred as it is not uniform. The MacLaren connection goes 'back to Gillwell' and if you are a Scouter or scout you may wear this as the Clan Chief gave us the right to (let me know if you don't have this story I have a dozen sources for it).
What do you think if the guys wear a Utility/ cargo kilts and the girls wear cargo shorts? They both can be found in Venturing charcoal gray. Both are practical for hiking.
