The choice of off the peg tartans is limited Your Grace, but they have a wide choice for made to measure ones. 
Nobody is forced to wear tartans they don't feel an affinity with but even if you feel limited with your Clan tartan choices maybe you can consider non-Clan ones, of which there is a wide choice.
As the tartan of my kilt is disowned as a MacMillan in any case then maybe you can enjoy it as it is and not feel guilty.
