    I have seen such jackets in other Victorian kilted photos - does anyone know what they were/are called?

    They've always reminded me of a "sack-coat", which was a popular style in the mid 1800's.

    Clearly not a jacket specifically designed to go with a kilt then, wonder if jacket length was less of an issue in those days.
