Maybe that strange jacket is creating an optical illusion.

There is a photo on the back of Bob Martin's All about your Kilt that show a group of Balmoral Ghillies wearing the almost exact same jacket.

They've always reminded me of a "sack-coat", which was a popular style in the mid 1800's.

Clearly not a jacket specifically designed to go with a kilt then, wonder if jacket length was less of an issue in those days.
