speaking of shirts...
The thread about how many kilts ? got me to thinking.
I don't have any trouble giving hundreds of dollars for a kilt, made from wool, built by hand.
But when it comes to shirts, I am a thrift store shopper. There, I said it. I bought nearly all the shirts I own at GoodWill or Salvation Army thrift stores. Now there are a few exceptions, but not many. I have scored some very expensive and nice stuff for very little money this way. Of course there is the time to peruse the racks, and if you count time, then it is not inexpensive at all. I think I like them because they group things by color first.
Anyone else have this duality/schizophrenia about their spending habits ?

Well, I haven't spent much time in thrift stores, but I will admit that most of my casual shirts come from Walmart, or another discount store.
If I want a nice dress shirt, I will either order it on line or go someplace like men's Warehouse.

Aside from kilts and certain specialty items I don't spend much on clothes. I typically buy shirts as I need them or when they are on the clearance rack. And more of my wardrobe (particularly the around the "around the house" and "laundry day" varieties) comes from christmas than I want to admit.
The only reason I spend more on kilts is because I can't pick one up at walmart for $10.00 or so.
Oh, and I do spend more on my shoes, but that's because cheap ones don't come in ogre.

I agree with these two statements.
I do buy most of my clothes in charity shops, but I don't buy a lot of clothes other than kilts.
When I need something for a special event then I will make sure I have something of quality and that it was bought at a place I trust.
(IE: The shirt I wore at my wedding was brand new and bought from a formal clothing supplier.)
As far as shoes, I have small, wide feet and something about the way I walk ruins my shoes. I buy to last.
(That said, I usually only have 3 pairs of shoes at a time. Boots, running shoes and formal shoes.)

Even at the discount stores, you can get some really nice dress shirts. I got one that I'll be posting pictures of on Sunday.

I've recently had very good luck picking up both dress and "nice" casual shirts at Kohl's. Stalk the sales and get what you need. Their house brand stuff (usually labeled "Croft and Barrow") isn't half bad...they do a nice cotton twill shirt.

Tell you what. I don't know anyone else's budget or whatnot, but I picked up some GOOD Geoffrey Beene shirts for $15 a piece during the winter. Just wait for their sales. These things are NICE - normally $30-$45 a piece.
But, thats me. Even though I am broke most of the time, when I have the money I'm a clothing connoisseur.

I'm retired. So thrift stores, eBay and resale stores are my primary source for clothes. But kilts - that's another matter!

The casual shirts that I wear with my kilts are the piper's shirts with clan crest. With jeans (winter) and shorts (summer), I like to wear the Ex-Officio and Orvis tech shirts. Those are drip-dry, light, and hard-wearing. For business casual for work Fridays and dates, I like my Polo sports shirts, in plaid, of course.
