I went out kilted last night (see post here) and had no problems, even walking back to the parking garage a little after midnight in the Theater (read: drunken nightclub) District.
(SWK Nighstalker, earthtone green dress shirt, black hose w/ NS flashes, black shoes, black leather jacket. One of the guys I was with took some pictures. I'll see if he got any good shots and post them here.
I was in the parking garage elevator with two reeeeally drunk guys and their dates (who were far too attractive to be seen with these bums), and one of the girls asked, "Are you afraid of strong breezes?"
Another couple guys I passed on the sidewalk gave a light-hearted Rowdy Roddy Piper remark. All in all, a very positive experience.
The Friday night piano sing-along at Jacob Wirth's is a must-do event. The women there were very kilt-friendly (Yay!! Kiltman!). Oh, to be young (relatively speaking) and single again.
I'll second (or third) the recommendation for Cambridge Brewing Company.
Mike's Pastry Shop in the North End for desserts (mmm...canolis).
The Burren Pub in Davis Square (Somerville) has traditional Irish music pretty much every night.
Thumbs up, also on the Black Rose. Also...McGann's, Paddy Burke's, and The Grand Canal (near North Station), James Gate and the Brendan Behan Pub (in Jamaica Plain). No shortage of Irish pubs in this town

That's me home now, thanks for all the suggestions.
I really enjoyed the visit and am very glad that I took with me and wore my kilt in the evenings for the working dinners at the MIT and then on out at night. Nice place, nice people and a few nice comments on the kilt.
We made it to the Cambridge Brewing Co., Doyles (just next door to there), The Field, Legal Seafood and another place whose name I can't remember but whose menu was in the form of a periodic table. That was all we could fit in as the schedule was pretty full.

My response:
"Not so much. Now, vents in the sidewalk grates, on the other hand..."

Saw this old post and had to laugh...
"Don't know Boston, but do know you should order some Boston Scrod for dinner if at all possible. Fish that melts in your mouth.
Ron"
Scrod
A small, ambiguous piece of fish that never knows if it's cod or haddock. Some people claim that "scrod" is a young cod, while "schrod" is a young haddock, but, in fact, there's no difference - it's basically whatever's cheaper at the fish pier that day.
"A businessman arriving in Boston for a convention found that his first
evening was free, and he decided to go find a good seafood restaurant
that served scrod, a Massachusetts specialty. Getting into a taxi, he
asked the cab driver, "Do you know where I can get scrod around here?"
"Sure," said the cabdriver. "I know a few places... but I can tell you it's
not often I hear someone use the third-person pluperfect indicative
anymore!"

That's something only Bay Staters are supposed to know. It's their little joke on the rest of the world. I had to live there to find that out!

Wondered why this thread was resurrected and it was me....hey...been to Boston once. Love fish. Scrod was recommended and I loved it. Maybe it was because of the thick butter sauce...I'll eat most anything dipped in butter.
And for sure I was a young hick from the sticks back then (late 1960s). But if I ever go back I'm gonna order it again - kilted this time.

Funny that this old thread has resurfaced as I've been invited back to Boston at the end of the month.
