Kilts?

I am going to my friends weeding. He is very Irish and asked me if I would where a kilt. I agreed but I have no idea were to get one or how much they cost or what I need to pull off this off. I am supposed to have some kind of tux top with a kilt bottom. Can someone please help I have no idea what I am doing and I do not want to make myself look stupid at my friends weeding.

First off,

You could start by checking out the "formal kilt pics" thread so you have an idea of what you're looking for. You could also check out the "kilt do's and dont's" thread so you know what not to do. Then you could check out the sponsors linked at the top of the page. Rocky at USAK has excellent customer service. I haven't dealt with any of the other sponsors.

You're probably going to want to get a Prince Charlie jacket... it is by far the most common formal kilt jacket, and can easily be rented if you're not sure you'll wear it more than once.

There are many people on this forum that will offer you excellent advice. So any time you have a question, feel free to ask... we have an entire "kilt advice" section for things like that. The gentlemen (and ladies) here will not steer you wrong!

Sounds very much like you should rent the entire outfit rather than purchase one. Lots of rental companies around including a few that work online and ship the goods out to you via UPS. If you do rent and then decide that you really can't live without having your own kilt, then I'd start reading posts here about kilt types, materials and companies/makers.

Yeah, unless you are wanting a kilt to wear for other occasions, rental is the way to go. The only thing you might need/want to buy is a pair of kilt hose to get away from the plain white that will be provided with the rental outfit.

Typical rental kilts are going to be A kilt with red and black so a pair of black kilt hose can be picked up from many of the represented vendors here.

I believe the Scottish Tartans Museum in Franklin NC can hook you up with a rental outfit for about $100

It looks like the only thing not included that would round out the outfit is a sgian dubh (small knife carried in the sock), but that is not a requirement.

Yup. Hard to disagree with rental. But I just know that after the wedding, when you have to box up the rental and return it, you'll be thinking buying would be a good idea. Follow the advice of people near you about the rental, they should know. And I would advise that if you are going to buy, start casual and lower priced and move up if you get the wear and tear out of the first. Buying big (by that I mean expensive) and then not using it would be a waste.

I will also say that rental is the way to go. However, unless you expect to use them again there is no point in buying kilt hose. While not everyone's taste the off-white hose the rental place will provide you with is more than acceptable and worn by many well respected members on this forum who could choose otherwise. My only caveat with the rental would be to forgo the belt even if they say it comes with the package.

First off

from Sunny Southern California!

You need to ask yourself some questions:

Do you intend to just wear the kilt for the one time?

How much money do you want to spend?

How much time do you have before the event?

Do you want to go formal or casual?

How much individual effort do you want to put into it?

The answers to these questions and the above advice will determine which way to go.

Rental may well be the only option available. If you have six to eight months, and plenty of cash, then you can spend the time and money on really nice formal highland attire that can be used for the rest of your life.

The choice is yours.

I agree with the others, rental would be a good idea. If you then like the kilt, and decide you'd like to go all-in and buy one, you'd have at least a little better idea of what you'd be looking for.
