I saw this on the news this morning. I had no idea about the origins of the melody or the lyrics. I'll never think of the song the same way again.

I'm sorry, Trefor, I forgot that that may not be something that's common knowledge outside the USA. I meant it sarcastically, anyway. The Kennedy Center Honors are given for "significant cultural contributions to the performing arts". It's one of my "go-to" references when I'm being sarcastic...much like my insistence that the guy who invented the "magic can" (the one with the little nitrogen capsule in it) for Guinness should get the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

I play "Derry Air" quite a bit, particularly at Irish-American funerals (in the Catholic hymnal it's called "Go Silent Friend"), but often as part of my sets as well, where I always segue into something more up-tempo, usually "Sean South" and "God Save Ireland". It's frequently requested, and I'm an entertainer; I try to play what people want to hear, and anything is better than "Amazing Grace".

I was at an Irish Festival once, and I must've piped AG by request a hundred times, until I simply refused. "See that guy in the next tent, selling swords, dirks, and axes? He says if he has to hear "Amazing Grace" just one more time, he'll run me through."

    Thanks AA.

But the inventor of the Widget was a true genius!

I would think that PiobBear must have been just as off as the guy in the next tent! I would think that any tune repeated ad nauseum would affect people like Chinese water torture. My male voice choir always gets asked to sing Myfanwy in a similar manner!

This is GREAT news! While we're at it, can we ban "Amazing Grace" too?

HEY! I LIKE Danny Boy! A whole bunch of Irish American nuns are going to be VERY unhappy about this!

Sorry AA, but I will always have a soft spot for Danny Boy. It was my grandfather's favorite tune and the one song sung at this memorial 18 years ago.

However I will go along with Amazing Grace as it has become to new bagpipers what Stairway to Heaven is to new guitarists.
