This is a picture of a stick that you may be interested in.To my mind,it is too short for work on "the hill" and too long for wandering about with. The shaft is hazel with the twists put in as a natural event by wild honey suckle. The top is walnut from a broken gun stock from rather a smart shotgun.

    The stick.

    The top.

    Twists.

I have several of these, including the tree root canes. I know you want to make your own, but I'm posting a link as an example of the kinds of wood they use. Scroll down the page to find the natural walking sticks and canes.

I think Jock's nailed it. That is exactly the kind of stick I'm looking for.

Jerry: The hazelwood and cherry canes stand out from the rest in the link you provided.

    And Christmas trees? Brilliant. ;)

Actually I rarely use it,but it is by the door, amongst a few others, for house guests to use.All you have to do is pop over and it will be there for you to use.

The same with all of you who would like to try out my Christmas tree walking sticks... there is great trekking to be done here in our French Alps.
    You are all welcomed.
I'd love to see the faces of the locals seeing all those walking men in kilts !

When leaving the lovely Abbey in Avranches(France) last year, clad in the kilt after a wedding, I caused a traffic accident. No, I did not walk into the road! All I did was stand on the pavement.Honest guv!Two drivers saw the kilt and then promptly drove into each other! So A A watch out, keep the kilts away from your roads!
