I'm sorry you had such a bad experience trying to get a new kilt.
I've had varying experiences in that particular store.
When I was looking for ghillies for my sister's wedding the staff knew exactly what they were talking about and helped me to find a shop that had some in my size. (They even went to the trouble of phoning them for me to have them kept aside.)
On other occasions I have had then simply ignore me from the moment I entered to the moment I left.
Phil: I'm not sure of any Kiltmakers in Renfrew street at the moment but I'll certainly be looking out for them when I am next in town.

I am pleased that other people have had good experiences but the level of bad ones is still cause for concern and it appears that Arlen and others have also experienced an inconsistency on different occasions. One can understand it when members of staff are already engaged with other customers but even then, an acknowledgement of your presence (as I always get in Hector Russell) is still possible.
You are well-known to the Edinburgh staff at least Hamish and also known to be acquainted with the family so possibly there might be a "best behaviour" element in your presence. That sort of thing happens in many situations alas.
Much as I might slag off "the opposition" I don't find them sat around twiddling their thumbs and ignoring people.

I have found the staff in the Glasgow shop most unhelpfull Iwent in to order a new kilt in Black Douglas tartan only to be told that it did not exist ! so iI went to another supplier who made me a lovely kilt with no hassle at all . I have had a kilt from the Edinburgh shop with no problems.

Sorry to hear you had such a negative experience. You could try Houstons of Paisley (where I have bought kilts) or the Pipebox/Kilt Shop in Hamilton (where one of my wife's relatives bought a kilt). Both of these should be within easy travel for you.

Mmm, interesting people are sharing my experiences of G.T. store. I do not like the overly eager salesperson. At the end of the day though, that is what they are hired to do. If I selected an item from a display and walked to the counter to pay, in my mind I've not been sold it as I chose it myself. I'm not expecting anyone to do anything other than to acknowledge my presence and offer help should I require it. And as someone pointed out, the moment I hit Hector Russell I was greeted and offered help. If G.T.'s business is so good that they can afford to pay 3 staff to sit and chat, good luck to them. Anyone who is or has been self-employed like myself in the past knows every customer is potential business. Make no sales, make no living.

Interesting stories and observations. Google shows several kilt retailers in central Glasgow. Does anyone have a favorite they can recommend?

If you are looking for a used kilt, are you aware of Vintage Kilts?
