I get totally lost in books and my mother finally learned to take a book from my hands and make eye contact when she would ask me to do a household chore when I was growing up. Otherwise I would nod when she asked me to do something without even realizing I'd agreed. But I'd still generally forget to fold the clothes immediately after the dryer stopped, even though I remembered she'd asked me to do so.
On topic: I try to be precise and logical in a problem-solver kinda way when I communicate opinions or make requests and suggestions. I've finally figured out that my logic can really be different from the other person's (or that they aren't trying for logic)! So then I might sound like a know-it-all or like I'm talking down to someone. Or just plain old bossy but don't mean to be at all! Simply being quiet, listening to someone else and not thinking while they're talking helps my conversation skills a good bit.

There is a old saying which perhaps sums it up
"I sometimes think the whole world is a bit queer(meaning strange) but me and thee; and sometimes I think thee a little queer, too."

Exactly right. It's not me that doesn't understand, it's everyone else.

I have, after many years of contemplation and considered thought on the subject, come to the conclusion that I don't and probably can't understand anyone. I get an idea of what I think they are about or what it appears to me is their motivation, but it's all a construct that my mind creates in order to bring some from of logic into an illogical world.
And besides, being a little crazy and senile myself makes life interesting. Having lost my own mind, I can hear the same joke weekly and laugh at it each time since I probably don't remember it.

I have Asperger's syndrome. I don't understand anyone, or how they communicate. Every conversation is like an instant messaging session; all I have to go on are the words. No body language, no verbal subtleties or slight variations of intonation.
Of course, after 18 years of practice, I can fake it pretty well. I still have ahuge eye contact problem, though.
But, on the brighter side, I'm never involved with "high school drama" or personal politics. I just sort of float through society, making a very few real friendships, and always making sure to never to make any enemies.
