OK, OK, some people DO care. Maybe your husband will care that the Welsh tartans don't date back to 1740. But honestly, so what? He should wear what he wants to wear and if one of the handsome Welsh tartans appeal, then that's what he should wear!

However, I do reiterate the notion of two kilts...one for "dress up" and one for those hot and sweaty days at the Games and for "messin' around". Of course, when he has two, he then might discover he needs another one, and then you might hear "honey, look at THIS tartan". When that happens, you know you've got a certified X-Marker on your hands.

Both an Anderson tartan and the St. David's National tartan are available in the polyester/viscose blend from USA Kilts. So a lightweight, washable kilt could be had for either side of the family.

Both USAK and Celtic Croft (whom Roan mentioned above, kilts-n-stuff.com) are XMTS sponsors. They both
handle the Welsh tartans in wool; or any good kiltmaker can get them for you.

One possibility which others have mentioned is a 4-yard, box-pleated kilt by Matt Newsome. This is a natural for our climate, even in the "good" 16-ounce worsted wool. The best part of being kilted in our climate is that you really do get some air circulation about the legs! (Almost) any kilt is going to be cooler than (almost) any trousers.

I read the thread quickly so I may have missed someone mentioning it but...

Another couple of tartan options for tartan choices are:
- the state tartans that most US states have,
- there are a few occupational tartans like Clergy and Firefighter
- If you have any connections to the military all of the branches have tartans.

I myself am relatively new to kilt wearing so I can not comment on cloth weight and manufacturer preferences.
