Thanks Jim, I certainly agree about the beauty of our country,...and as for the friendliness of the people, that goes without saying, and i would of course agree.
It really has come on leaps and bounds in the past ten years or so,.. we are definately on the up...at last.
At last!!!
Thank you,
Neil.

In 2000 I visited County Down, and found its countryside very beautiful. We stayed at a farmhouse on the outskirts of Banbridge. The first afternoon, our landlady guided us to the Heritage Centre, which at that time was across the street from the courthouse. We were driving a hire car with Killkenny plates from the Republic. As we followed her on the street she slowed and pointed at the building we wanted to visit, and sped off to pick up her son from school. We quickly found a space and parked and exited from the vehicle as two young British Army troops were approaching us. As they got within earshot, I wished them a pleasant day in my very Boston accent. They both smiled and relaxed as they passed us by. It wasn't until we were back at the B & B watching the telly that we found out that the courthouse had a trial for one of the biggies during the troubles. The Brits were on alert for possible attacks to the trial. They probably thought we were Republicans up to mischief when we first parked directly in front of the courthouse. We laugh about it to this day. The only big deal of traveling in the North at that time was the price of petrol. It was almost double the cost of petrol in the Republic!
During our three days there, we met many wonderful people, including a couple of distant cousins that knew of my side of the family. The church and Post Office in Ballyroney are absolutely beautiful. The church has not needed restoration since before my great-great grand parents left for America. Everything was exactly as it appeared in their wedding portraits at the church. I hope to be in Ireland and Scotland again in 2009. Maybe we can meet then.
I still hum "Star of the County Down" at work.
In long lasting peace. --- Steve
