Here are two articles that may help your paper. One of them is about a kid who tried to wear his kilt to school, and another is in regards to "sporran laws"

Sometimes looking at things from the opposite side of the fence can help you form thoughts for the direction of you paper. Think about how women were discriminated for wearing pants. It probably wasn't until after WWII that women were accepted in pants.

I too would like to read your paper when you're finished.

So, officially I am going to be writing about "Discrimination Of Men And Unbifurcated Clothing". the one stumbling block, that I have is, I need actual reasearch data that people are discriminated for wearing a kilt. So, if any of you know of ANY info please shoot it my way! I will be posting this to the forum when I have finished the essay, and who knows it might even be good enough to be added to the kilt articles page.

Now, if you think this is rediculus then do tell me so, but I know from my kilt days that people no matter where I am (highland games are the exception) make comments about my sexual oreintation.

    Thanks!

Casey, as one who holds two psych degrees, I can honestly say that I think it's an excellent proposal! I'm interested in how you're going to gather the info, whether it's an empirical study, and how long you have to complete this paper.

If I can be of assistance, please feel free to PM me.

And as has been mentioned, they often do not treat it in the same way that they treat other traditional garments from other cultures.
That's exactly the way my workplace handles it. Women in my position have the option of wearing skirts so I came to work with a kilt on (while complying with all the regulations for skirts such as length and hose and things) and was told it was not allowed. There is no official policy against it and when I pushed the matter (only slightly because it's not worth losing my job over clothing choices) there was a bit of hemming and hawing about and some "I'll look into it..." comments while nothing was done. They even stopped responding to my emails in hopes that I will give up. It's a tarbaby nobody wants to touch.
Out of curiousity, could one of you guys in Scotland ask your local UPS guy if a kilt could be worn to work? For office personnel and management of course and not uniformed drivers. I have been wondering, since it is a more recognized form of dress there, if it would be acceptable. Obviously your coworkers would look at you funny for overdressing but other than that would it be allowed?

The case of Jerry Griffin at the University of California had a happy outcome. Here's a link to one page with the story:

We'll be anxiously awaiting the results of your paper. Extra points to you if you can squeeze in the word "misandry".

Seems from the various threads posted here the issue is less discrimination than it is power and control or fear.

After a couple years of being kilted at work (Federal/State funded rural mental health agency as a licensed professional counselor) I was suddenly prohibited from wearing the kilt by management. Reason, a big insurance contract was up for grabs and the "buyers" were coming to inspect the agency and staff. Fear was that somehow my being kilted would have the power to lose the contract. I did so well at the "inspection" wearing pants - turned out the lead inspector and I had many professional friends in common - I was given permission to wear kilts whenever I wanted.

Then, a few months later a mentally ill client complained (quite consistant with her diagnosos) that she was somehow offended that I wore a kilt. Again, management fear rose up and I was again banned from wearing kilts at work. The "because I say so" power and control issue rose up with the fear.

I followed company policy for grievance and successfully appealed the prohibition.

Think the link to this silly adventure was given above. But you might wish to include fear as one of the things you look at in your paper.

In Jerry Griffin's case it seemed like power and control too, but we only have the brief story there.

    Good luck,
