I zip all of mine up in a "delicates" bag like Steve and wash them on cold. I use either my regular detergent or some wool wash if I have it--there's one I like made from tea tree oil that is quite nice. I also have a front-loading machine so it keeps agitation and soap quantity to a minimum. Hang to dry (blends) or shape and place on a rack (handknitted wool.) Voila!

I occasionally have to pop them in the dryer (low or no heat) when done for a minute or two to remove stray dog hairs. I have a couple of Norwegian Elkhounds--they shed just once, all year, and sometimes my dark hose need a bit of dethatching.

Is this a great board or what!!??

I own a LOT of kilt hose. And I'm probably the champion kilt hose shrinker. I've donated more than a few pairs of shrunken kilt hose to the local thrift store and I'm guessing some children have considered them great winter finds when they bought them.

Bottom line, today I hand wash ALL my kilt hose in Woolite in the bathroom sink and hang dry. Period. Just isn't worth the expense I've born experimenting with the washer any more. Gentle cycle in the washer never did anything for me than shrink up my kilt hose beyond stretching them back.

I wash them up the night I wear them. Usually two pair since I work a long day and change hose when home for lunch. Yes its a chore, but its become sort of a loving ritual too. I'm happy to do it to avoid feeling stupid for shrinking my hose again.

Hand wash in Woolite, hang dry, no problems.
